Fair Board Meets, Unanimously Vote to Include Carnival, Hears Full Update on Repairs
September 2nd, 2009 by Joe BurgessThe Drew County fair board met in special session Tuesday night, and after hearing updates on the status of repairs at the fairgrounds, voted unanimously to include the carnival at this year’s Drew County fair.
Since last month’s fair board meeting, when the president and two members resigned, this month’s meeting brought two more resignations. Sheila Lampkin, who is running for state representative, stepped down from her position, but will still help with fair preparation. Board member Jodie Holstead also sent in a letter of resignation.
The status report for the fairgrounds includes;
The fencing has been completed, and all damaged fences are back in place.
The parking lot has been graded, and now will drain in two directions.
Trees and all debris have been removed.
C&L Electric donated their time and labor, and has rebuilt the power supply grid.
All holes from trees and power lines have been filled.
The parking lot repair was done by a farmer, who was rained out of the field, and donated his time and effort to help out the fair. There is still one wet spot that is being fed by an underground spring, that will have to be marked off and driven around.
When the discussion came to the possibility of having a carnival, one board member said, “I feel 100% better about the situation now (after hearing the positive report),” along with a few, “I want to have it,” and “I’m all for it” by other members.
Board President John Wayne Ross added how helpful it was to have”12 days of good, clear weather”.
There is a lot of work still to be done, which includes picking up and cleaning the fairgrounds. Anyone who would like to volunteer to help get the grounds ready for this year’s fair, please e-mail joe@MonticelloLive.com and I will relay your information on to the fair board.
This year’s fair will be held September19-26, with pageants being held on the 19th, Gospel Music Night on Monday, Sept. 21, and the talent show on Tuesday, Sept 22. The Rodeo will be held as well on Friday and Saturday.
