Fading Weevils get walked on
Published by UAM News March 22nd, 2007 in UAM Sports.Despite holding Belhaven College to just six hits, the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (3-23) were unable to
overcome six walks as they dropped a 5-3 decision to the Blazers on Tuesday at Smith-Wills Stadium.
The Weevils scored first in the top of the first inning, as Gustavo Villegas (Jr., Cangues, Puerto Rico) hit a sacrifice fly to give the Weevils a 1-0
lead. However, the Blazers struck back in the fourth inning as Buddy Wyrick led off the inning with a home run to tie the contest at 1-1, and the Blazers added a pair of runs on an RBI double by Thomas Royals and an RBI single by Bryan Bennett to take a 3-1 lead after four.
The Boll Weevils knotted the game in the top of the seventh inning as Matt Gardner (Fr., West Monroe, La.) hit an RBI grounder and Haley Hougen (Sr., Wylie, Texas) later scored on a double play ball, but the Blazers scored their winning runs on a two-run single by Ricky Owens in the bottom of the seventh, and held the Weevils scoreless the remainder of the way.
Cory DeJarnette (Fr., White Hall, Ark.) suffered the loss for the Weevils after allowing two runs on one hit in 1 2/3 innings. Jon Michael Kidd (Fr., West Monroe, La.) was 3-for-4 in the loss.
The Boll Weevils will return to action on Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25 with a three-game Gulf South Conference series against Arkansas Tech. First pitch from Russellville on Saturday is scheduled for 2 p.m. with Sunday’s single game beginning at 2 p.m.
