Public school administrators and teachers joined students and faculty from the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s School of Education recently for a discussion of exemplary programs and best practices in education.

The workshop was hosted by Mary Jo Barnett, ERZ director, and Tracie Jones, assistant director of the Southeast Arkansas Education Renewal Zone (ERZ) and attracted 76 educators as well as community leaders. The event spotlighted outstanding programs and classrooms at area schools and included roundtable discussions about top programs and teachers in each district represented.

UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter and Provost R. David Ray welcomed the group to campus while Dr. Peggy Doss, dean of the School of Education, Dr. Morris Bramlett, dean of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, and Dr. Mark Spencer, dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, talked about the resources available to public schools through their respective departments.

Monticello Elementary School teachers Emily White and Cindy Akin presented a discussion of cognitive guided instruction while Star City High School teachers Shelly Owens and Jenny Patoka discussed co-teaching in Algebra I. Roger LaFleur, director of the Centers for Youth and Families, discussed the center’s role in education.
