Editorial: The Future of Media

I’ve been elated about the enthusiasm shown from our schools and students about MonticelloLive. From UAM to our junior high schools, students are reading, leaving comments, and getting involved in our community through this site. Here’s hoping that this ongoing form of online community will continue to provoke and create interest in our future leaders.

We desperately need more people in our community involved in our city and county’s "machinery." Fresh ideas, new perspectives, and a long-term plan are essential for Monticello to thrive and morph into a regional center of commerce and change. I believe our students will be an important part of this process.

Over at the Pomo Blog, Terry Heaton has an insightful commentary about a recent experience he had while speaking to high school journalism students. I encourage you to stop by and read his thoughts. He’s an expert on trends in today’s media.

For anyone wondering how "blogs" are changing the landscape of communication and media, one has only to look at MonticelloLive’s immediate and quick impact on a community. It enables everyone’s ideas to be voiced and heard. To that end, MonticelloLive will be adding a feature called "For You," which will enable people to leave constructive comments and ideas about community life and involvement. You can find the new section under "News."

I think your comments are very well said, Jeff. It is absolutely imperative that students become involved. They have such wonderful ideas and need to be encouraged to learn about their school, community, state, and world affairs. Their voices are so important to our future. It begins in the classroom as they learn to write and express their opinion. Ask them to defend their beliefs with evidence. Encourage students to ask questions and seek answers.
