Student representatives and facilitators from Monticello Intermediate, Middle, and High School EAST classrooms hosted EAST Night Out on Tuesday, October 21st. The Open House was designed to inform the community of the great things that EAST students are doing in our community. The EAST Initiative is an educational model that is engaging students in sophisticated service-learning projects that involve relevant teamwork and cutting-edge technology. The EAST Initiative (www.EASTinitiative.org) is an educational non-profit that works with schools and institutions across the country to implement local EAST programs. The EAST Initiative has a thirteen-year track record of helping schools, facilitators, and students better engage technology education, service learning, and individualized educational goals in a program that has been named a model program by the United States Department of Education and The United States Department of Labor. The Monticello School District is the only district in the nation to have EAST classrooms at the Intermediate, Middle and High School levels.
“EAST Night Out was a great opportunity for us to showcase what our students are doing to practically impact our community. We have a great group of up and coming leaders that are going to leave their mark on their schools and this town. They are not only gaining skills in technology, but they are developing invaluable people skills,” MMS EAST facilitator Ryan Copico commented. “A big THANKS goes out to these kids for stepping up tonight and to the folks that came out in support of our kids.”
EAST Night Out was hosted at the MHS EAST Classroom. Several community leaders, including Dr. Peggy Doss and Dr. Jack Lasiter from UAM, parents, and district staff in attendance were given a “tour” of the technology and projects by students ranging from grades 5-12.
