East Gaines Marked as “One Lane Traffic, From Square to Gabbert

January 29th, 2014 by

imageimageimageimage

For years, there has been public confusion about whether East Gaines St, from Cockrell’s to the Chamber of Commerce, is “one or two lane traffic”.

It became more complicated when AHTD accidentally painted white stripes there, 5 years ago.  They quickly reacted by putting black paint on top of the white paint’ but that still somewhat appeared as 2-lane markings to some drivers.

Monday, they again attempted to correct the situation, by “roto-milling” the well worn paint away, as shown above.

MPD Chief Eddy Deaton has confirmed that this area is One Lane Traffic, until it crosses Gabbert Street, and urges drivers to use caution there.

You’ve posted about this before and I started using it as a one way, but when I’m on that road I’m the only one, people are honking at me, trying to pass me. And it makes me feel like I’m the one doing wrong. I hope a lot of people read this! Thanks

Your’re not the only one. I have always used the road as a one-way from Cockrell’s to the Chamber of Commerce. I just drive the middle lane as you should but rarely does anyone try to pass me or honk at me. Some people think at night, just because no one is parked in the parking spots, they can just use that area as a driving lane, but that is not so. I still see people drive right through the stop signs though very often. Also, I’ve witnessed drivers coming up the 2-lane one-way from the former Harper Law Office direction, and drivers in the far left lane jump from their lane into the right lane to turn into EX-Mart or to navigate the curve. For years, I’ve seen this happen and I just don’t understand it! I’m just a cautious driver and I pay attention to the other drivers and try to avoid accidents. When things like this happen to us, the police is never around to witness, so I just say we need to keep doing what we’re doing and pay close attention to the other drivers.
