Driving on Suspended License–Around City Hall–Twice
Published by Joe Burgess November 14th, 2008 in Police /Legal.Two local men have been brought BACK INTO city hall in the past two days, charged with driving on suspended license, immediately after leaving court and police departments. One man is in jail, and the other has a court date.
Wednesday afternoon, Derek Kinlow was convicted of his second offense of driving on a suspended driver’s license, and was sentenced to serve 10 days in jail, which were to be scheduled in the near future. Upon leaving the courtroom, shortly after telling District Court Judge Ken Harper that he was not going to be driving until everything was corrected, Kinzlow got into his vehicle, cranked it, and turned the wheel to drive away. A Monticello Police officer noticed Kinzlow’s actions, and brought him back into the courtroom, to stand before Judge Harper, again. The judge quickly found Kinzlow in Contempt of Court, and ordered him to remain in jail until Friday, when he again will go before the district court.
Ironically, as I was on my way into the Police Dept. Thursday to ask about the Kinzlow case, I noticed a man leaving the building. As the man cranked his truck, a neaby police officer tapped on the man’s driver’s window, and asked him if his driver’s license was suspended. He responded that they were, and that he didn’t know that until earlier in the day.
Stanley Benefield was then brought back into city hall, where he’d just shown an employee a letter about his license being suspended. Benefield was then charged with driving with a suspended license. Benefield was issued a citation, and caught a ride home.
