Drew County Road Condition Update

MonticelloLive.com just spoke with Drew County Judge Damon Lampkin in reference to road conditions around the county.

Judge Lampkin has been inspecting road conditions this afternoon, and reports that most county roads are frozen, and continue to be covered in ice in many places.

With the afternoon highs remaining below the freezing mark, road conditions probably won’t improve before tomorrow morning.

County officials encourage everyone who can to remain off of the roads, and remind all drivers to use extreme caution, if you must be out around the county.

When we moved to Louisville, KY, we noticed something new they are doing before inclement winter weather that really works. They are pre-treating the roads within 12 hours of a winter storm like what happened in Monticello with a brine solution (looks like it would be salt water, but I am not sure what’s in the solution). It’s applied by trucks pulling 16-20 foot trailers with water tanks filled with this stuff, and it just sprays on the roads from behind the trailer by gravity through spray nozzles (kind of like a liquid fertilizer setup). Then when the freezing rain or snow hits the pre-treated roads, unless it’s a HUGE amount of precipitation it just melts. There’s no telling how many accidents and lives it saves for MUCH less money than attacking the conditions after the storm.
