Report from Drew County Quorum Court Meeting

The Drew County Quorum Court met in it’s regular session, tonight, upstairs at the courthouse.

The monthly finances were approved.

Other item’s on the agenda included approving $2,200 for the Disabled American Veterans to use toward the purchase 12 passenger van, to be used in a 6 county wide area.  See the next story for more details.

The justices approved the “general operations budget” for the 2008 operations year, which was the summary of the detailed budget that has been the point of interest at the recent series of budget meetings.  The budget passed with all voting in favor.

Drew Memorial Hospital’s Administrator, Richard Goddard, presented a brief report from the hospital, mentioning the ongoing recruitment of an OB/GYN specialist, as well as an update on the home health dept. being 95% in place, in their new offices, located at the old Arise Charter School location, on HWY 278 east.

Goddard also told the group that the hospital’s new Chief Financial Officer, Shannon Clark, is now on staff.  The hospital board did not meet this month.

Near the end of the meeting, a member of the court asked about an earlier meeting’s question regarding whether local “water associations” would be able to collect for county trash pick-ups.  Judge Damon Lampkin updated the court, telling them that it wasn’t feesible to implement, due to several complications with the process.

The meeting then adjourned.

Thanks to Judge Lampkin and Drew County Quoruem Court, DAV Chapter 11 has reached their goal of $13,000 for the purchase of a 2008 Ford Van. This Van will be used to transport veterans from counties in Southeastern Arkansas to Little Rock Veterans Hospital Facilities where they will be afforded the opportunity to receive medical treatment. Most people don’t know that there are a lot of WWII veterans who do not go to seek treatment for injuries they received in the war, because they can’t afford it. I have spoken to many who must utlize their funds for food and utilities. Some do go for treatment, but as a eight six year old man told me, he can’t drive that well, has his own car, pays for the gas, pays a young person, usually $40 to $60 to drive him to his appointment. This Van is FREE to veterans, they are responsible for this freedom that we all enjoy.
The funding goal was reached by contributions from, counties, cities, businesses, veterans organizations, and veterans.
