Drew Central School Board-Construction Update-Emergency Bus Routes Approved to Reduce “Flood Days”
December 18th, 2009 by Rebecca FriendThursday night Drew Central’s regular monthly board meeting began with the Principal’s reports. Frank Ferguson, DCHS principal, was the first to report. He commented on the quick and tremendous response and help from the public in regards to the death of Jesse Cash. He said several people and groups had come in to council the students and helped them through this hard time. “We appreciate the assistance that they gave us,” stated Ferguson.
Mike Johnston, DC Elementary principal, discussed the where he spent the $25,000 his school received. He bought 19 projectors and screens for the faculty at the elementary school. He said that over all the teachers liked the projectors and were using them regularly.
Laura Fawcett, Coordinated School Health Director, updated the board on her work around the campus. She mentioned the district promoting healthy eating habits and said that that was going well. She also mentioned the Pirate Emergency Response Team, eight 9-12th grade students trained in CPR and First Aid who can help the school nurse respond to medical problems on campus. She said that she was hoping to have 22 this spring.
Wayne Fawcett, Superintendent, asked the board to approve emergency routes that he would put in place in case of flooding. These routes will have parents drop students off at places such as a church or a cemetery with a large parking lot so that the buses can get in and turn around easily in the rain. According to Fawcett, he has had to close schools four times, and had he had these routes, schools could have remained open 3/4 times it was closed. He also asked for approval to ask for bids for a 42 passenger handicapped bus. The board approved both of these.
The last major item discussed was the progress of the construction. Fawcett said they were 98% finished with the construction of the new building. They were hoping to have it ready for the kindergarten art class to move in January 4, but it was not possible with all the rain we have had. He did say they hoped to have everyone moved in or ready to move in before the next board meeting.
