In Chicot County, in 1989, Williams pleaded guilty to manslaughter and attempted 2nd degree murder, and sentenced to ten years in prison. He served less than 4 years.
In Chicot County, in 1997, he was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and gave him a suspended sentence.
Those. 3 felonies cause this verdict to be for a “habitual offender.”
The sentence for first degree murder is from 10-60 years, or “life without parole.” He would have to serve 70% of that time , before being eligible for parole.
The sentence for abuse of a corpse is 3-20 years. He would have to serve 1/6 of that time , before being eligible for parole.
The most significant statement by the prosecution was, “Don’t give him the chance to kill anyone else, unless he does it in prison.”
The decision was turned over to the jury at 3:20.
They returned 8 minutes later and sentenced Williams to “life (without parole), plus 20 years”.
The judge then sentenced Williams to the jury’s recommended sentence.
