D’Angelo Dean has been named the Gulf South Conference West Division Freshman of the Year, announced Tuesday by the conference office.

Dean (Cincinnati, Ohio) has been given the award after an impressive freshman campaign of being UAM’s third leading scorer with an average of 11.6 points per game. Dean has also crashed the boards hard this season, grabbing an average of 6.9 rebounds per contest.

Over the course of the season, Dean scored 10 or more points in 13 games, including reaching the 20-point mark twice. He recorded his career high 28 points in a loss on the road in non-conference play to Philander Smith only one game after leading the Weevils with 20 points in a win over Southern Arkansas at home. Dean has recorded four double-doubles this season, including three straight.

Dean and the Weevils take the court tomorrow night (March 5) in the opening round of the GSC Tournament in Southaven, Miss. at the DeSoto County Civic Center against Montevallo.

The game starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be carried live on the radio at KHBM-FM 93.7, which will be streamed live through UAM’s athletic website by logging on to uamsports.com.
