Couple Arrested for Endangering the Welfare of Minors & Possession of Drugs
January 5th, 2010 by Joe BurgessAccording to Sheriff Mark Gober, the Drew County Sheriff’s Department, with the assistance of Monticello Police Department, executed a search warrant at a residence located at 796 Highway 278 West on December 29th. Sheriff Gober had information of drugs being sold out of the residence. Prior to this date the department had received complaints of traffic in and out during all our hours of the day.
During the search authorities found drug paraphernalia and approximately 2.4 grams of a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine. The couple residing at the residence is Marchello Woods and Leshaundria King, as well as two small children, one age 8 and a newborn infant. Woods and King, both age 27, were arrested and placed in the Drew County Detention Facility. The Department of Human Services was notified and placed the children with a relative.
Marchello Woods was charged with possession with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, and endangering the welfare of a minor. His bond was set at $10,000. He bonded the next day. Lashaundria King was charged with possession with intent to deliver and endangering the welfare of a minor. Her bond was set at $15,000. She posted bond the same day.

why is her bail higher than his?
Bail was set way too low if these two are out again. My heart goes out to the innocent children. Hopefully the relatives they were placed with will love and take care of these children.
I’m wondering the same thing about the bail. He has 3 charges, she has 2 charges, yet her bail was higher. Was it due to an infant being hers? God Bless the family members taking care of these precious children.
The reason her bail is higher than his, is because she was the one responsible for her children and when she put them in danger with all of the drugs in her posession and around the children, she took a big chance of endangering the lives of those children. IT SEEMS AS IF SHE WAS OLD ENOUGH TO ACCEPT THE REPSONSIBLITY FOR THEM!! AFTER ALL.. SHE HAD THEM!! I don’t think that she deserves to have them back, either! If she does it once, you can bet that she’ll do it again!
Sherry, hers was higher because the child was probably hers and not his but that’s just my guess
im telling you dope dealers and excons get the lowest bonds of any crime ive ever seen.
why was bail set why keep them in jail then after the hearing if found gelty put them jail
Maybe she had previous problems with the law or maybe she gave them trouble while arresting her.Who knows?
Tsk-Tsk-Tsk!!! Ain’t that a shame.
Really, this is somewhat ridiculous. It’s not even as though that were a large amount of cocaine at all, and where do they get off giving them an “Intent to deliver” charge? How is it intent to deliver when the SMALL amount was found INSIDE of the home. There was no evidence to lead the police to believe that they were dealing drugs besides reports from people and complaints of constant traffic. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have people coming and going from my home relatively often. Last time I checked, I own the house, and I’m pretty sure it’s not illegal for people to come and go.
Secondly, there’s no real proof that the children were in any danger. Sure, the parents enjoyed doing cocaine, but that doesn’t mean the children were in any danger. Should we start charging people with endangerment of minors because they are drunk in their home with children around?
And how about all the “nice” folks who use drugs in front of the kids, because the drugs were perscribed? Or as the previous writer mentioned BOOZE and how about smoking in front of the kids? We really are screwed, with that kind of thinking. And does anyone think that our “officials” are smart or wise enough, that they decide who can put what into their own bodies? But, yet, everyday our local “bootleggers” sell booze to young and old alike, and no none seems to care. We are a bunch of hypocrits, we scream and shout about “illegal drugs”. And every year over a million Americans die of legal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and overdose of perscriptions, but “pot” kills none, all other illegal drugs only account for around 4400 additional people dying. But we still keep several drugs illegal, therefore keeping a healthy black market in the control of organized crime. No one believes these folks were any kind of “big time drug dealers”. So once again a big headline, serving only to impress the ignorant, and glorify the local “officials” so they get some votes. But notice this, drugs are as available today, as any other day here in Monticello, and Drew county. With all the money spent, either we should demand results or change the policy.
WOW….I just finished reading “Zach’s” comments and I certainly hope he is not responsible for any children…… If you have ever been a child of an additcated “parent” (and yes alcohol/drugs) then you have NO IDEA the danger the children were in…….Thanks to all the agencies and family that did see the PROBLEM here and do what is in the BEST INTEREST of the children…… BTW if the parents are drunk they can’t take care of themselves so how could they take care of their children, so that’s a YES to that ? also……….
As “Another County Employee” stated, there is no evidence showing that these people are/were legitimate and large scale drug dealers. They pose no real threat to the community. Especially in our community, people are at more of a risk being killed by a drunk driver than by dying in a illegal drug related accident.
Yes, it is good that these people were arrested, but they are small time dealers if anything. Why are we lauding the police force for expending so much of their budget to take down small time people? Once again, there’s a big headline for little work. When I start seeing busts for several pounds of drugs, then I’ll believe they’re making progress.
Also, as apparently, “Sue” does not realize, there is such a thing as responsible drug use. At dinner, when enjoying a meal, is it uncommon to order a glass of wine or two along with the meal? Yes, drugs can be abused, but there isn’t a difference in the possibility of abuse when it comes to legal and illegal drugs. And yes, alcohol is a drug (GASP).
And now, those children were seperated from their parents because people lump everything dealing with illegal drugs together as bad. Because of this, these children could very well grow up never knowing their parents. The sentance for selling cocaine is a minimum of ten years, this along with the other charges, yes, these children will likely not see their parents for some time.
As I previously stated, there is no real evidence that the children were in any danger. I honestly don’t believe “Sue” even knows who the children are. People hear “drug” and “children” in the same context and immediately are screaming, “DEAR LORD SOMEONE SAVE THE CHILDREN.” as they take a few sips from their beer.
Hmmmm!!!! Once again i sit here reading these comments and i feel the need to leave a comment!!! Sorry for those children and for those parents everyone in this community has been in a situation where everyone has there own opinion!!! No drug is better than the other just as one sin is greater than the other. Yes we judge people without thought knowing if the shoe was on the other foot you would think very differently. I know the couple and the children.
thats some b.s. firstly people need to mind their own business thats whats wrong with the world today. hey or maybe they need to create some jobs in this town so people won’t have to sell drugs. i go to work 5 days a week, but if i could not find a job that enabled me to take care of my family what would be the fastest way to git it? SELL DRUGS! if it came down to my family eating and staying warm or “doing the right thing” im going to feed my family and keep them warm by ant means necessary…yes this includes but is not limited to selling drugs! wow…2.4 ounces? the world is a better place now. they did what they needed to do for the well being of their family. aint no sense of sitting in the dark, cold, and hungry but boasting about following the law! they didnt endanger their children, they showed how much they cared for risking their freedom to make sure they were okay.
