Community Design Center proposal finished

The Community Design Center of the University of Arkansas has finished its study and finalized its report on the development of Monticello. Commissioned by the Monticello Economic Development Commission, the CDC has engaged in a comprehensive and lengthy study of Monticello, including its history, development, and growth. Their report has been published in a nice, four-color 150-plus page book which the MEDC has only a limited number of copies for distribution to elected officials and other community leaders.

One of the significant projections from the reports states that, "Over the next 20 years, Monticello is predicted to add 1300 housing starts, or 30% of its current housing stock. The shape of that growth will determine Monticello’s capacity to be a community of choice."

In addition, the report cited that Monticello has "consumed land at 6.2 times its population growth rate of the past half century." It relates that this "sprawl" creates a drain on city resources and results in haphazard city development.

The report details methods for a more strategic development of Monticello’s city infrastructure and includes ideas and plans for the entire community. One or more town meetings are to be scheduled within the next 60 days at which CDC personnel will present their findings and review their proposal with interested members of the community.
