Monticello needs help protecting drainage ditches

The City of Monticello is responsible for maintaining storm drains in public areas and along city streets. Storm drains and ditches divert the water and debris after a storm or rain shower away from road surfaces, public access areas or low basins where water collection could be unhealthy or dangerous.

Water should flow into drains and ditches where it can be safely channeled into streams, creeks or underground. The Street Department routinely cleans drains and ditches to remove any obstruction of the flow of water. Citizens are reminded to never dispose of leaves, grass clippings or trash into the drainage system or in a location where debris can be swept into the system by storm water. Such actions may result in serious flooding after the next storm. Please remember to:

1 Keep your ditches as clean as possible by raking or sweeping grass and leaves out

2 Do not burn in ditches

3 Property owners are expected to keep vegetation cut in the ditches on private property

4 Don’t dump loose grass, leaves or debris into the ditches

5 Ditches should never be burned or sprayed with defoliants. Vegetation in ditches provides stability to the banks and the natural filtration of storm water
