During the discussion about the pool liner for the City Park pool, Judge Clifton Bond asked Mayor Joe Rogers where we stood as far as replacing the pool in Jordan Park.

The Mayor mentioned the possible construction of a “more centrally located” pool, possibly in the old Whaley school location, and added that with the improvements taking place at Jordan Park, with more to be added, that there may not be room for a pool, among the other improvements.

There were comments from council members about the subject, including Claudia Hartness’, “We promised those people a pool.” Her wording caught the attention of several of those present, and then was followed by her “No decision will be made until it’s made by the Council.”

Another council member, who had not been in favor of a community pool stayed after the meeting to discuss recent developments in an informal setting with Rogers and a couple of folks who remained in the council room after the meeting, seemed to agree that since UAM had been supportive of a “community pool”, combined with the intention by the local school systems to consider it’s benefits , said that he would now be in favor of it’s being pursued.

Jordan park needs a pool. That would be a place that our children can go and swim that is close to their neighborhoods. I have very fond memories of my family and I taking swimming lessons and once we learned, we went everyday. Rev.Binns was an excellent manager. We need something postive in every neighborhood and I feel we need to concentrate on getting something for our youth to do. Please fix the pool and reopen it.

Here we go with the community pool being built again. Does no one on the council understand that where the mayor has his HEART and DREAM set on placing the Community pool, is in the Heart of an Historic district. We have some of the most beautiful homes in Arkansas lining that area of the street. No one seems to understand that if the pool is built in this area, how in a few years it goes down, and the place begins to run down. After working at “community centers” in other cities for years and a degree in Recreation, I can just say this is a sad situation. The community center sounds like a great idea, but the fact is the deteriation of a building and facility only takes a short time for it to become a place that is not a BEAUTIFUL spot both inside and out. Please Monticello….FIGHT THIS IDEA!
Keep the Historic District that!! keep Monticello on the right plan with a plan to retain it’s Historic Setting!
