The Monticello City Council held it’s regular monthly meeting Thursday night at 6 p.m., at City Hall.

After approval of the minutes of last months meeting, Kimberly Fletcher presented the financial report, which seems to be very close to expected results for this time of year.  She pointed out that there were some items that may appear to be high, but, like the firefighter’s tools, were simply a timing issue, paying for items that were already budgeted items.

Glenda Bolin presented the Chamber of Commerce report, stating that most of the Chamber’s attention this time of year is being spent on preparation for the Rough & Ready Days Festival.  The Chamber is currently working on contracts, programs, and volunteers for the festival.  New Chamber of Commerce members include, Wells-Fargo Home Mortgage, AFLAC Insurance, Northside Baptist Church, and UAM Systems.

This month’s “Chamber Coffee” will be held at the open house of Drew Professional Services, behind Drew Memorial Hospital, this Tuesday from 8 til 9:30 a.m.

Truman Hamilton covered the MEDC report with information about Monticello’s boat companies contacting the destroyed boat plant in Clinton, AR., by offering to do whatever they can to help our neighbors to the north, who had their facilities destroyed by recent tornadoes.  Hamilton also mentioned that he had also let them know that Monticello had a vacant building they might be interested in.

Other items highlighted in the MEDC report included a mention of the Intermodal Facility, the soon to be opening Farmer’s Market, and “20 for the Future’s” upcoming trip to Washington, D.C.  Hamilton also had included early versions of resolutions that will probably be need action during next month’s meeting, such as meeting need qualificaitons, relating to becoming a “Tree City” that would help with “points” in other grants for local projects.

The Chamber of Commerce represents our county and should be supported a 100% by all of us! I’ll gladly volunteer to help with it any way I can! It is a reflection of our county and it’s people..we should all be proud of it and the dedication that Glenda has devoted to it and the endless hours she has given to make things better for us and the visitors who rely on it as well.
Sincerely, Nan Carter and Robin Smith
