City Council Called Meeting Report

The Monticello City Council met in a special called meeting, Tuesday night.

The main item on the agenda was approving a resolution to adopt the county’s mitigation plan.

The council had tabled the resolution at last week’s meeting, in order to allow city attorney Bill Daniels to research the 185 page document.  This week, County Judge Damon Lampkin was present to explain the purpose of the document, and to make them aware that Wilmar, Tillar, and Jerome have already accepted the plan.

The mitigation plan is a requirement, in association with FEMA, and basically states that the city will do what is generally considered normal operating procedures, in the event of a disaster.  The plan describes which items take priority in the event of emergencies, such as floods, tornadoes, and ice storms.

The council voted in support of it’s passing, especially since failure to do so could cause disqualifications from some government agencies.

The council also allowed timber bids to be taken for 21 acres of land, that is a part of the Razorback Bird Club’s recently revised lease, pending the club’s approval, and decided to wait until later to accept bids for timber on another city property, the old city dump on E. Jackson Street.

They then allocated approximately $40,000 for the building of a fence across the south side of the soccer field at the sports complex. The fence will be constructed of commercial grade Steel Gate fencing, with 2 foot brick columns every 24 foot, across the length of the front of the soccer fields, which is approximately 900 feet.  They also approved the application for a grant to help fund lights for the soccer field.
