The campus Flag was raided, and them lowered to half staff, and the choir sang the Star Spangled Banner.

These two photos are of the Monticello Doctors exhibit at the museum there are numerous photos of Doctors including the first doctor in Monticello as well as the first African-American Doctor in Monticello, Also in the cases are the tools of the trade, I can remember as a tot going to Dr. Hyatt’s office on Main Street and usually if one in the family was ill all of the family was, but this particular time stands out, Myself and my brother were sick with colds and had to receive a shot, Dr. Hyatt came in with a ominous looking metal syringe full of white liquid stuck it in my arm shot half of it in and pulled the needle out and jabbed it in my brother releasing the remainder of the medicine. How many of you can remember the “old days of modern medicine”?

“In memory of Rooster”

Tuesday would have been your twenty second birthday.

It’s hard to believe that you have been gone three years, today.

We miss you everyday but have much comfort knowing “my soul finds rest in GOD alone: my salvation comes from HIM. He alone is my rock and my salvation: He is my fortress, I will never be shaken”.

I am sure that you have had the best birthday celebration ever and I am sure you are dancing around. If I know you: probally trying to teach the angels how to do the “motorcycle” dance that your NENE never mastered!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, my baby boy!

Love you, forever and always,

Momma

Vera Lloyd – First “Big Picture” Inspired School In Arkansas

Saturday, September 17th, 2011

“We’re still doing school the same way today as it was done 200 years ago.” – Jen Jones – Vera Lloyd School Supervisor

The ways in which Big Picture schools operate are very untraditional. There are no grades or tests and teaching is done on a more individual level, taking each child’s own interests into account. Mentors from the community are a major component in the success of the program and, according to Mrs. Jones, the success of each student’s future.

“With Big Picture, the school is here for the kids, the kids don’t have to fit into the school,” Mrs. Jones said as she showed me around the newly designed classrooms. Comfortable sitting areas for group time, tables pushed together where teachers sit with the students, rather than standing in front of them as in a more traditional setting, and student-created charts on the walls were just a few of the noticeable changes in the rooms.

“We’ve designed the rooms to be easily rearranged and for group work. They do a lot of group work, unless a particular child doesn’t learn best in that type of setting, and then we cater to them, as well.” – Jen Jones (more…)

Railroad Bridge Support Now Out of HWY 277, after Falling Again Monday

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

HWY 277 was closed when a 160,000  pound,  190 ft. long railroad bridge support, manufactured in Little Rock and being transported to Brownsville, TX fell off of it’s tansport Thursday night, around 7:30.

Early Friday morning, heavy duty wreckers were brought to the scene, but weren’t able lift the huge piece of metal.

Work continued Friday to figure out how to get the 16 ft. high load back onto the trucking dollies, and 2 construction cranes were brought in from Monroe, LA, which arrived Saturday.

The cranes were able to lift the bridge support, and, Sunday morning,  it was chained back into place on the dollies, prepared for it’s trip to Texas, on Monday.

According to Drew County Sherrif Mark Gober, who was at the scene until the roadway was open, Monday around 1 pm, the convoy began slowly moving westwest, and was able to travel approximately 1/4 mile, before encountering another curve/hill combination, which again flipped the bridge support over onto the 2-lane highway, again closing the road.

With more damage being done to the piece of steel, and closing the state highway for several more day not being a viable option; a timber clearing dozer was brought in to push the huge object into the road ditch, to be dealt with later.

The road was re-opened to traffic around 9:30 pm.

Labor Day

Monday, September 5th, 2011

According to Wikipedia, the first big Labor Day in the United States was observed on September 5, 1882, by the Central Labor Union of New York. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894.

Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. Labor Day is considered the last day of the year for fashionable women to wear white.

In sports, Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. NCAA teams usually play their first games the week before Labor Day, with the NFL traditionally playing their first game the Thursday following Labor Day. The Southern 500 NASCAR auto race was held that day from 1950 to 1983 in Darlington, South Carolina. At Indianapolis, the National Hot Rod Association hold their finals to the U.S. Nationals drag race.
