Sammie Lindsey’s application for a liquor license for private club, located at 1566 Winchester Road, was denied by the Arkansas Alcohol Beverage Control, on May 19, but that denial was overturned by the ABC board with a 3-1 vote, Wednesday.

Lindsey’s application, filed in April, received many letters of opposition, included letters from Drew County Sheriff Mark Gober, Drew County Judge Damon Lampkin, and Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Deen.

At the appeal hearing, the list of witnesses, included Judge Damon Lampkin, Sheriff Mark Gober, Police Cheif Robert Rosegrant, Cpt. Eddie Deaton, Lt. Steven Stain, and a local state trooper. A petition with 147 names was presented in favor of the “club”.

A local pastor also testified, supporting Lindsey, and the need for the club. Rev. Ronald Forte, in a telephone interview Tuesday morning said, “I’m not in favor of drinking, but I believe that this could bring a form of economic improvent to Monticello.” He added, “Going to Mr. Lindsey’s restaurant and bar is no different than going to Chili’s in Pine Bluff., If we don’t do something different, we’re just going to stay the same.”

Lindsey told MonticelloLive that our ealier story was incorrect, and that the business “it isn’t going to be a club, it will be a restaurant.” But for clarification, the ABC can only approve liquor permits for “private clubs” as defined by the legislature, there is no separate definition for restaurants.

Alcohol dispensed at private clubs is for “on premises consumption only”.

Union Bank held a cook-out styled dinner at the home of Zach McClendon, Friday evening, in appreciation of the dentists and other volunteers that provided this weekend’s ArMOM Free Dental Clinic in Monticello.

Dr. Tim Chase, immediate past president of the Arkansas State Dental Association, presented Dr. Terry Fiddler, Chairman of the Arkansas Mission of Mercy event, with a plaque honoring him as an honorary Monticellonian. Dr. Fiddler has made several trips to Monticello in preparation for the May event, and the City Council and Mayor Joe Rogers recognized his work for the people of Monticello through this award.

Dr. Bob Mason, president of the Arkansas State Dental Association, recently had “challenge coins” created to recognize the values of Arkansas dentists, including duty, honor, selfless service, respect and integrity. He presented two of the coins Friday night at the dinner honoring ARMOM volunteers sponsored by Union Bank. Accepting the coins were Dr. Jack Lassiter, UAM Chancellor, and Mr. Zach McClendon.

Winning football championships may have been on the minds of about 400 Arkansas Razorback fans at a May 13 fundraiser, which featured Bobby Petrino, Razorback head football coach. But the event’s real winners were residents of the Arkansas Baptist Children’s Homes and Family Ministries (ABCHomes).

The more than $60,000 raised from the dinner event, held at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM), will benefit the Baptist Home for Children, the 116-year-old ministry to children and families in crisis located just a few miles from UAM.

The event theme was “Giving Hope and Changing Lives.”

After the dinner, guests were treated to special music by The Baptist Homes’ Pruet Cottage ensemble, a group of the homes’ youngest girls. They later took the house down during a performance of “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands,” featuring their own rendition that included, “He’s Got the Razorbacks in His Hands,” while also calling the Hogs.

In his address, Petrino said he was honored to be part of the event. “I can’t think of a better event for me to be at than one that is about raising children, because that is my job,” he said. “I have 135 that we help raise and work with every day. I would not want to do anything else.”

Recalling four core values of the Razorbacks, Petrino said the team is committed first to “grinding” it out in the classroom, on the field and in life. Such commitment, he said, requires team members to sacrifice their time, as well as the courage to face fears and courage to walk away from conflict.

Second, Petrino said the team must be ready for “show time,” which requires preparation, practice and performance. In this quest, Petrino told the crowd of a bell that sits in the middle of the team’s weight room. When team members reach a personal best lift, they jump up and ring the bell.

Scanning the crowd to locate the Pruet ensemble, Petrino pointed at the girls and said, “During your song, you just rang the bell. You did a great job. You were well prepared. You had practiced, and then you performed and rang the bell.”

Petrino noted that his players are “one team with one goal” and are dedicated to “finishing.” Recalling several games last year that the team lost in the fourth quarter, he boldly said, “Next year is about finishing and winning.” Cheers and applause erupted.

Following a question and answer time with Petrino, an auction of a Razorback painting signed by Petrino and Jim Lindsey, former Razorback and University of Arkansas Board of trustees member, brought in $4,300. Lindsey matched the contribution.

The ensemble group presented Petrino with a framed Razorback shirt, embroidered with the ABCHomes logo and signed by each resident of the Monticello Home.

Long after the event concluded, Petrino was still signing autographs and taking photographs with ABCHomes children and many others.

John Ross, event coordinator and ABCHomes development officer, said the funds raised will make a difference in the lives of many.

“Through these kind gifts, many children in our care will receive hope and changed lives,” he said.

Editor’s note:   There will be a reception held in honor of the Noble family, Sunday, June 21st,  from 7pm – 9pm, at the BCM on the UAM campus.  All friends are invited to attend this come and go style reception.Â

Next month brings big change for one Monticello family. The Nobles, Jeff, Carolyn and their children Sam and Adelyn, will be moving to Blacksburg, Virginia where Jeff will become pastor of Northstar Church. Â

The family has called Monticello home for 15 years, beginning in 1995 after graduating from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.  His role began his influence in the community when he began serving as a campus minister at the Baptist Collegiate Ministry at UAM. In 2003, after 8 years, Jeff resigned from his position and embarked on a new calling as pastor and church planter. He started Journey Church which has continued to grow. As a bivocational church planter, he also started a business, Noble Design and then in 2006 this website, MonticelloLive.com.

Over the years, he has preached in many churches throughout southeast Arkansas. He has also demonstrated a passion for missions, traveling around the world, including China, the Dominican Republic, Canada, Maine, Colorado and Poland. But of equal importance to Jeff and Carolyn is their deep involvement in the lives of others right here in their own community. He, along with Carolyn, is committed to personal discipling, each helping others on their own faith journey.

Jeff, Carolyn, Sam, and Adelyn will be greatly missed by many as they leave Monticello. As a community that has experienced life with the Nobles, we hate to see them go, yet are excited with them as they settle into this new life adventure 824 miles east. You can keep up with their journey by reading Jeff’s blog, Notes from the Trail, at www.journeyguy.com

Jeff said, “We are so grateful for the time we’ve been able to share with the people of Monticello. We were truly blessed to live and minister here. Our deepest hope is that our lives have been a testimony to the love and joy of following Christ.”Â

Jeff Noble, pastor of Journey Church and founder of MonticelloLive.com is one of 237 marketing bloggers from 16 nations authoring a book to benefit international children’s charity.

A local pastor is part of a unique collaboration via the internet, involving 237 marketing professionals who blog from 29 states throughout the U.S. and from 14 other nations from Australia to the Ukraine. Jeff Noble, of Monticello, joined online with other bloggers to write The Age of Conversation 2, a book that is being published this month. All proceeds from sales of the book, available in hardcover and softcover editions, as well as a downloadable e-book, will be donated to Variety, the international children’s charity.

Jeff is the founding pastor at Journey Church and is also the founder of MonticelloLive.com and owner of Noble Design. He writes a blog called Notes from the Trail.

The book has an unusual story behind it, involving online connections between people around the world who have never met each other.

Drew McLellan, who heads an advertising agency in Des Moines, writes a blog online. Drew’s Marketing Minute is among the 25 most-read marketing blogs, and a regular reader is Gavin Heaton, who works for global software giant SAP in Sydney, Australia. Heaton writes a blog called Servant of Chaos.

Nearly two years ago through a chance online conversation, McLellan and Heaton decided to invite fellow bloggers to participate in writing a book about conversation and how it impacts us in marketing, in business and in life in general. “Blogging, after all, is about conversation,” McLellan said.

More than 100 bloggers from the U.S. and eight countries responded by contributing essays on conversation. The book, published in the summer of 2007, earned $15,000, all of which was donated to the international childrens charity Variety.

“Gavin and I were overwhelmed with the response,” said McLellan “Almost as soon as the first book was published, we heard from bloggers asking when the next book would be published so they could contribute essays.”

Noble contributed an essay titled “Listening Is An Action,” which urges Christians to stop, take time, and truly listen to what others are saying. Noble says in the essay, “There has been far too much yelling and too little dialogue from people of faith in our age, regardless of their age. “

“Blogging has become a new way for professional to share and discuss ideas,” Jeff said. Collaborating on a book about conversation is a perfect way to share among ourselves and among others who don’t read blogs. And we have the added incentive of helping a charity that does important work around the world. I am thrilled to be a part of this project.”

The Age of Conversation 2 will be available as a downloadable e-book beginning October 28, at a cost of $12.50, of which $10 will be contributed to Variety. Beginning on the same date, orders will be taken for a limited number of printed books in hardcover ($29.95, with $6.04 to charity) and softcover ($19.95, with $8.02 donated to charity).

Purchases can be made online at http://stores.lulu.com/ageofconversation. More information can be seen online at www.ageofconversation.com.
