MHS’s Brunson, Thornton Sign Letters to Play College Football

Monticello Billies graduating seniors Troy Brunson and Edwin Thornton signed national letters of intent to play college football, Wednesday morning.

Brunson, a center and linebacker, signed to play with UAM next season.

Thornton, an offensive and defensive back, will play for Arkansas Tech.

Congratulation to both athletes for all that they’ve meant to the Billies.

Lady Billies Win Holiday Tournament

The Lady Billies won the Holiday Tournament at UAM, this week.

The Sr. Billies (guys) earned a spot in the Championship game, but came in second place to Marion.

The Monticello Junior Billies had a fantastic football season in 2011. Named the Southeast Junior High Football Conference Champs, the Billies were praised by the community and the school board.

Not all news made by the Jr. High Billies was so well received. At the end of a heated game against Hamburg, the traditional handshake turned quickly into a brawl on the field. The fight included parents, players, and coaches.

Jr. Billies Recognized by School Board

During Tuesday night’s regular school board meeting, the Board took the time to formally recognize the Jr. Billies football team for their great season. On behalf of the team, players Sadaeys Miller and Dallas Blagg accepted an award for becoming the 2011 Southeast Junior High Football Conference Champs.

Superintendent Bobby Harper praised the coaches saying, “We are very forunate to have the kind of people we have coaching our kids.”

Monticello Defeats Sylvan Hills 26 – 14

KHBM's Player of the Game, Cole Connelly, starting an 11 yard run for a 1st down on the Billies second scoring drive.

The Monticello Billies defeated the Sylvan Hills Bears 26 to 14 Friday Night at Hyatt Field.  Both teams looked good as the first three quarters where back and forth with each team scoring a pair of touch downs.

But Monticello pulled away late in the fourth quarter to win this conference battle.  The Billies travel to Crossett next week to take on the Eagles.

Monticello Competes In District Cross Country Meet at UAM

Monticello competed in the District Cross Country Meet this past at  UAM.  Here are the results…

Watson Chapel wins against the Monticello Billies 21-14

Billies 1st touchdown, turning the corner, and heading to the goal line.

Watson Chapel traveled to Monticello to take on the Billies Friday night at Hyatt Field.

With less than 2 minutes to go in the game, Monticello held Watson Chapel on 4 downs, on their own 19 yard line, taking the ball over on downs, for a potential score .

In the end, the Wildcats held off the Billies for the win, with the final score of 21 to 14.

Monticello travels to White Hall to take on the Bulldogs next Friday in a Class 5A battle.

The Monticello Sr. Billies went to Dumas, and dominated the hometown Bobcats, especially in the second half, to earn their second victory of the year, following the 6-6 tie with Warren to open the season, last week.

The Billies travel to Little Rock to take on Mills, next week.

 

Saline River Shoot Out Ends In A 6-6 Tie

The first annual Union Bank Saline River Shoot Out ends with a tied score of 6-6.

Both teams where scoreless in the first half of play.

Warren intercepted the ball and later made a touchdown, but missed the extra point.

Monticello responded with a touchdown of their own. But missed the extra point and the chance to take the lead.

The Billies travel to Dumas next week to take on the Bobcats.

The “Saline River Shootout” trophy will be shared between the schools, this year.  Warren won a coin toss, and will get to keep the trophy for it’s first possession.

Brishen Mathews Makes Tackle on ESPN

Local college football fans watching the Ole Miss vs. BYU game, Tuesday night, couldn’t help but smile when they heard the name of former Monticello Billie Brishen Mathews getting credit for a tackle on a Cougar’s kick returner, early in the second half of the nationally televised game.

Good work, Brishen.

The Monticello Sr. Billies got off to a winning start with their 27-7 victory over the Hamburg Lions, at Hamburg.

The Billies’ defense scored first, followed by a long scoring drive by the offense, to get the first quarter of the first game off to a good start.

The Warren Lumberjacks come to Hyatt Field next Friday. 

Come out and support the Billies in this ongoing rivalry, in the Saline River Shootout..

Union Bank Recognizes Monticello / Warren Football Rivalry with “Saline River Shootout”

Union Bank’s Dave Dickson led the press conference, Friday morning, where the  “Saline River Shootout” trophy was unveiled, in honor of the long, rich history of the football rivalry between the  Monticello Billes and Warren Lumberjacks.

The rivalry has gone back and forth, with both teams sharing victories, but the stakes will be raised even higher next year when both teams are competing in the 4A conference.

The teams have even requested that their yearly contest be scheduled at the end of each season, when conference rankings mean more, as the state playoffs draw near.

The huge trophy will be displayed at Union Banks branches in both towns and at both school, before the September 9 game.  It will then go home with the games winning team, until next year’s ”Saline River Shootout.”

The Monticello Sr. Billies welcomed the Star City Bulldogs to Hyatt Field, Tuesday night, for a football scrimmage, where both teams’ offensive, defensive, and kicking teams got to ”put on the pads” against someone besides their own teammates.

The game, under the hot south Arkansas sun, was designed to point out areas where the teams and coaches need to focus, before actual competition begins for the studio.

Billies Assistant Coach Greg Tiner Selected as Head Football Coach – Updated

At a special called Monticello School Board meeting, Thursday evening, several position were filled, including the recent vacancy in the position of head football coach, following the resignation of Coach Van Paschal.

Billies assistant coach Greg Tiner was hired as head coach by the school board, moving up from the position of assistant coach.

Coach Tiner had also served in the capacity of Jr. High head coach, and has been in a coaching position with the school district for a total of 16 years.

CoachTiner told MonticelloLive, “I am excited about the opportunity to be the head football coach at Monticello;  we will do everything we can to continue the tradition and the type program we have had for the last 25 years.”

Brishen Matthews & Coach Paschal Win State Honors, Joe Carmical also Recognized

Congratulations to Brishen Matthews for being named the 2009 State Farm 5A Defensive Player of the Year for the State of Arkansas and to Coach Van Paschal for being named the 2009 State Farm 5A Coach of the Year!

We also congratulate Joe Carmical for being named one of the top three 2009 State Farm 5A Offensive Players of the Year! He will always be our #1 Offensive Player of the Year!

Congratulations again to the 2009 Football Senior Billies on a great season!!

The Monticello Billies defeat the Camden Fairview Cardinals 38-7 to win the 5A championship.

Monticello second string goes in with 5:25 left in the game. Still 38-7.

Caleb Bryant carries the ball in to take the Billies 38-7 after a series of penalties against the Cardinals. Extra point is no good.

Joe Carmical keeps the ball to take the Billies 32-7. Extra point no good again.

Beginning of fourth quarter. Score unchanged. Billies will start 2nd & 6 on the Cardinals’ 11-yd line.

Cardinals TD, extra point good. 26-7 with 4:04 left in 3rd.

Billies TD, extra point good. 26-0 with 6:09 left in 3rd quarter.

Billies TD, extra point no good. 19-0 with 10:02 left in the third.

Hyatt Field & Cotton Boll Stadium Back in Operation, after Lighting Repairs

084Monticello’s Hyatt Field and Cotton Boll Stadium are back in business, following repairs to the base of the stadium lighting fixtures.

Monticello School superintendent Bobby Harper told MonticelloLive that Hyatt Field’s poles have had the welding operation completed, and have been inspected by certified welding inspectors, and that the field is back in service.

081Starko Inc. had been contracted to weld 4 inch by 12 inch gussett plates to the base of the 4 light poles at Hyatt Field, with 12 gussetts being attached to each pole.  That began Friday, and continued Saturday and Sunday, until the task was completed.

083The next game to be played at Hyatt Field will be Friday night as the Billies take on Little Rock McClellan. (more…)
