MJB Cheerleaders Earn Awards at Camp

The Monticello Junior High Cheerleaders spent a week at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) cheerleading camp in Jonesboro this summer and received two awards. They placed second for their Home Pom Routine and a Camp Superior trophy for receiving blue ribbons all week on their evaluations for cheer and Xtreme dance routine. They received 4 blue ribbons one gold ribbon. Also, the MJB Cheerleaders were one of four schools to earn “The Banana Award” at Camp. To earn the privilege of the Banana the squad had to demonstrate excellence in Team leadership, sportsmanship, and spirit. Individual awards were given to Elizabeth Echols (gold ribbon for jump-off). Elizabeth Echols, Mary Kate Jones, and Morgan Hopper received American Cheerleader pin award for demonstrating leadership and good sportsmanship at camp.

Congratulations to the following girls for earning All-American honors. Elizabeth Echols, Courtney Bordeaux, Mary Kate Jones, Anna Norris, Breanna Smith, and Morgan Hopper.. These girls will have the opportunity to cheer at the Houston Day Parade and the Pr-Game performance at the Capitol One Bowl in Orlando, FL.
Billies Assistant Coach Greg Tiner Selected as Head Football Coach – Updated

At a special called Monticello School Board meeting, Thursday evening, several position were filled, including the recent vacancy in the position of head football coach, following the resignation of Coach Van Paschal.
Billies assistant coach Greg Tiner was hired as head coach by the school board, moving up from the position of assistant coach.
Coach Tiner had also served in the capacity of Jr. High head coach, and has been in a coaching position with the school district for a total of 16 years.
CoachTiner told MonticelloLive, “I am excited about the opportunity to be the head football coach at Monticello; we will do everything we can to continue the tradition and the type program we have had for the last 25 years.”

After 5 seasons as football coach, two 5A conference championship titles, and this year’s 5A State Championship, Coach Van Paschal is leaving the Monticello Billies to coach Class 3A Barton.
Billies Fall to Beebe 6-2 in 5A State Baseball Championship
Saturday, May 22nd, 2010After two wins over the Beebe Badgers this year, the Monticello Sr. Billies lost to the Badgers Friday afternoon, by a final score of 6-2, in the final game of the 5A State Baseball Championship.
Beebe’s pitcher lead their team, by striking out 11 Billie batters in 7 innings, while Brandon Matthew’s bat delivered a home run, a single, and a walk for Monticello.
Congratulations to the Billies, in spite of the loss, for providing an exciting, successful season of baseball for the MHS fans.
Monticello Lady Billies Have Record Breaking Season
Wednesday, May 12th, 2010The Monticello Lady Billie softball team set a state record this last season. They set the team record for stolen bases in a season with 74. The mark was 71 set by the Lady Bulldogs of Fayetteville last season.
Madelynn Gates was the main thief with 25 on the year, followed by Karyss Coleman with 14 swipes, and Parker Palsa added 12 to the larceny. Gates is 2nd on the list for steals in a game with 4 and tied the record for runs scored in a game with 4. Coleman tied the record for hits in a game with 5, as well as matching Gates for runs scored in a game. Gates, a sophomore, also made the list for triples in a season and steals in a season, and is on pace to shatter the career state steals record (44), set by Lauren Caldwell of the Fayetteville Lady Bulldogs from 2006-2009. Lady Billies Sweep Lady Comets

After coming off a 9-8 loss to Star City the lady Billies come up to plate firing on all cylinders. In game #1 of two Varsity games series Tuesday afternoon. Monticello Lady Billies had 12 runs on 14 hits and 3 errors. Parker Palsa, Lady Billie Pitcher #34, had 8 strikeouts in the 12-8 win over the Lady Comet’s. Callie Wilkerson, 3B #31, went 3 hits for 3 at bats with 1 stolen base and 1 RBI. Gena Johnson caught 2 lady comet’s trying to steal one at 2nd and one at 3rd. Madelynn Gates, LF #2, extends her stolen base total to 16, continuing to climb her way up the ladder in the state record book for th most stolen bases in a single season. Williams, RF #13, Hancock, 2B #6, and Norton, DH #1, contributed with RBI’s in the Lady Billie game #1 win.
In game #2 of the series the Lady Billies kept the momentum and continued to pour it on the Lady Comets. The Lady Billies had 11 runs on 6 hits and 1 error. Parker Palsa, 3B #34, had 2 hits at 2 at bats with 2 RBI’s and 2 stolen bases. Karyss Coleman, CF #00, had 2 hits at 3 at bats with 2 stolen bases. Callie Wilkerson #31, Lady Billie Pitcher in game #2, pitched a complete game shutout with 7 strikeouts in the 11-0 win. Johnson, LF #32, and White, SS #20, had clutch hits to rally the Lady Billies past the 10 run limit to end the game in 5 innings.

Proclamation Honoring State Champion Monticello Billies at City Council Meeting

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010Monticello High School will hold a formal signing of Letters of Intent and Commitments to Play College Football on Wednesday February 3rd at 11am in the Monticello High School Library.
Please join us as we celebrate with these members of the 2009 State Championship Billies as they move on to their college careers.
Monticello to Host 5A State Baseball Tournament in May
Monday, January 18th, 2010Monticello has been chosen as the host city for the 2010 5A high school baseball tournament, which will be held on May 14, 15, and 17.
The Arkansas Activities Association executive board made the selection Thursday, and director Lance Taylor notified Monticello School superintendent Bobby Harper of their decision.
MMS Blue Archer “Splits Arrow”

Monticello Middle School’s “Blue Archers” are practicing in preparation for the Arkansas State Tournament on Saturday, February 6th, in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Deseray Selzer is new to the team as a 7th grader and is doing extremely well. She had a “Robin Hood” moment at practice on recently, as she hit the bull’s-eye with her first arrow and split it with her second arrow.
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is very excited about the state tournament. A record number of students are expected to participate in the event. Monticello Middle School placed 2nd last year at state and had three students who qualified to go to National’s in Louisville, Kentucky.
Coach Sherry Knight and Assistant Coach Herman Fleming are anticipating that their team will score at least 2600 to qualify the entire team for National’s in Kentucky. The public is welcome to attend the ANASP (Arkansas National Archery in the Schools Program) in February in Hot Springs. Come out and support this great sport.

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009Congratulations to Brishen Matthews for being named the 2009 State Farm 5A Defensive Player of the Year for the State of Arkansas and to Coach Van Paschal for being named the 2009 State Farm 5A Coach of the Year!
We also congratulate Joe Carmical for being named one of the top three 2009 State Farm 5A Offensive Players of the Year! He will always be our #1 Offensive Player of the Year!

135 Photos-Billies Win State Championship
Monday, December 7th, 2009The Monticello Sr. Billies completed their undefeated season with another impressive victory, this time by defeating the Camden-Fairview Cardinals in the State Championship Game at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, Friday night.
The 38-7 victory earned the Billies their first State Championship title in 15 years.
Brishen Matthews was selected as the game’s MVP, for the 195 combined yards he gained. 
Monticello’s defense was outstanding, as well, holding Cardinal offense to only 67 yards in the first half.
The Billies had three different players with over 100 yards of offense in the victory.
Hooten’s Arkansas Football interviewed team members after the game. Quarterback Joe Carmical commented on how familiar the team was with running the triple-option, stating that they’ve used that offense since the 8th grade.
Coach Van Paschal pointed out that the team had made a commitment to the FCA group, and had began each practice and game in prayer, and that he felt God had honored the team for that.

Billies Defeat Pulaski Academy Bruins 34-20, Next Stop-War Memorial Stadium for State Championship
Friday, November 27th, 2009After taking the opening drive 65 yards for a touchdown, the Billies led the Pulaski Academy Bruins by a halftime score of 20-14.
With around 9 minutes left in the 4th quarter, the Billies scored another touchdown, followed by a 2 point conversion.
The Bruins then scored a touchdown and went for two, but failed on the conversion.
The Billies held on to their lead, and won by a final score a score of 34-20.
Next Friday, the Billies will travel to War Memorial Stadium to take on Camden Fairview (who beat Greenbrier 49-28), to determine the State Champion.

The Monticello Billies will be at home again Friday night for the semi-finals in the 5A State Championship. Tailgate is 6pm and Kick-off is set for 7:30pm. The Boosters would like Monticello to show their support for the Billies by tying blue ribbons up for the Billies.
Everyone can be a part of welcoming the Monticello Billies home for the Thanksgiving holidays by buying blue ribbon and tying bows on their mailboxes, trees, front doors and car antennas. Businesses are urged to put blue ribbons on their signs and doorways, also.
Area stores and florists will be selling Billie Blue bows this week, so that everyone can be part of the “Billie Experience”.
In addition, Billie fans are asked to wear a blue ribbon to show their Billie pride and support.
Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to spend with your family and friends. Come be part of the Billie family and support the Billies as they work their way toward a State Championship.

Billies Defeat Greene County Tech 54-22
Friday, November 20th, 2009The Monticello Sr. Billies defeated Greene County Tech, Friday night by a score of 54-22.
The Billies led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, after a fumble recovery and an interception by Marcy Robinson.
The second quarter featured a 92 yard touchdown run by Joe Carmical, and led to a halftime score of 34-0.
The emotional second half was filled with penalties, and showed both teams scoring, including a good performance by Monticello second team.
The Billies will host Pulaski Academy Bruins (who defeated Greenwood 21-14) next Friday to decide which team will travel to War Memorial Stadium to compete in the State Championship game.
Billies Set to Clip Eagle’s Wings Friday Night
Thursday, November 19th, 2009The Billies will be at home this Friday night for the 2nd round of the Arkansas State Play- Offs. The Boosters are planning on celebrating the evening and the Billies beginning with a tailgate at 6pm Friday Night. This week the tailgate will be set up by the player’s gate to allow fans to enjoy the tailgate while cheering the players on to the field for warm-ups. The player’s gate is located on the south end of the field by the pool. Look for the large crowd beginning at 6pm.
Everyone in the community is invited to the free pregame tailgate. Fans are asked to bring a dish to share in a disposable container. Billie Fans who get to the tailgate before 6:30 will be able to pick up a free ticket for drawings that will take place throughout the game. Start your evening with the tailgate and then stay for some great football.
Kick-Off is schedule again this week for 7:30pm at Hyatt Field. The Billies will take the field against the Greene County Tech Eagles for the privilege of moving on to the State Semi-finals.
Immediately following the game Billie fans will gather in the South end zone. The after the game celebration will feature pizza donated by Larry’s. But, fans are encouraged to bring a dessert or snack to share. The Monticello Football Boosters encourage fans to come early-stay late-and enjoy the “Billie Experience”.
When you are getting ready for the game Friday night be sure to pack lots of Billie Spirit and your best noise makers. Friday night at Hyatt field is the best place to be. The Sr. Billies held on to defeat the North Pulaski Falcons by a final score of 41-8, as the “sportsmanship timing” rule once again came into play during a Billies’ game.
The Billies end the season with an undefeated 10-0 record, and a 7-0 conference record against teams in the 5A Southeast division.
The Billies will welcome their undecided playoff opponent to Hyatt Field next Friday, with a game starting time set for 7:30.

Friday, October 30th, 2009The Monticello Billies downed the Crossett Eagles by a final score of 43-0.
The Billies led at half-time by a score of 37-0, so the mercy rule began at the start of the second half.
The Billies offense and defense both performed on an impressive level, while the Eagles were plagued by turnovers.
The Billies close out the regular season next THURSDAY, by taking on North Pulaski at Monticello’s Hyatt Field, and could end the season without a loss, thus entering the playoffs on a final wave of success.

Billies Coach Van Paschal was present at the Monticello City Council meeting to accept the city’s proclamation honoring the undefeated Monticello Sr.Billies for their undefeated, state championship season.
