Monticello vs. Drew Central 12 Days Of Christmas Food Drive

Thursday, December 5th, 2019

food drive (1)This year Monticello and Drew Central basketball teams are joining forces to fight hunger in Drew County. Instead of bringing gifts for the 12 days of Christmas, the schools are asking you to help with this mission. Students and community members are asked to bring the food items for each day. Although it is a competition between schools, the real opponent is hunger.

You can bring the designated food items to the school of your choice: Monticello High School or Drew Central High School. This drive will begin December 4 and end on December 19. The food totals and winning school will be announced at the Monticello vs. Drew Central basketball game on December 20. Thank you for all you help in this community effort to bounce out hunger.

beeSupport and Propagation of Pollinators

The importance of pollinators in generating of our food supply is underscored by the fact that 1/3 of fruits and vegetables require pollinator interaction to produce mature flowers/seed pods/fruit.  Pollinators include birds, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, wasps, small mammals, most importantly bees.  Honey Bees are only one of the many bee types which aid in pollination: paper wasps, yellow jacket carpenter bees, bumble bees, and sphecidae wasp are among those needing pollen and nectar to survive and in the process pollinate plants.  Pollinators also have a positive impact on beef, livestock, and dairy industries as they help pollinate forages and hay crops.
