Businesses Growing, Moving, & Opening in Monticello
May 18th, 2010 by Joe Burgess
As I was working on a story lead, Monday, I began to realize just how many businesses in town are opening, expanding, and moving, and how many construction projects are going on, this week.
As MEDC president Bennie Ryburn III has said several times at meetings, “Monticello’s economy has continued to be strong, and has benefited from a large business/retail and service providers” (including medical, educational, state and local governmental services providers).
Today MonticelloLive will feature several businesses and projects that you may, or may not be aware of, that show that Monticello is the “hub of Southeast Arkansas.”
Check back later in the day, to see more business growth stories, as they are added.

Glad to see new businesses are coming. Sorry to see a business leaving downtown…………..one more empty storefront. I hope the downtown area will continue clean up and become revitalized.
True, true.
There are many new businesses. Interesting is the Mixed Martial Arts club, comes to mind though I’m drawing a blank on the others. I’m sure I’ll be filled in later.
Also the newly built apartments means more people living in Monticello and jobs for those doing the building.
I’d really like to see if a person could make a go of the old movie theater. The art deco inside is beautiful. Possibly bringing small live theater to Monticello.
I agree with hobitt- great idea on the theatre. It’s too beautiful to go to waste.
I don’t know what the condition of the inside of the old theater is but I think it would be neat to see a dollar theater or something go in there. Play a different older movie at different times of the day. Especially since summers coming and all these kids will be out of school.
I think using the old theater would be a great idea!!
Great idea on the old theatre! The theater has so much potential! It would be a great venue for dollar movies and for non-hollywood type movies (can’t think of the name of that type of movies, but they would include things such as “March of the Penguin, or other documentary type films). Maybe it could be used for dinner theater or community play house productions. Maybe the arts or theater departments at UAM would be interested in doing something there. Lots of ideas………..although I don’t know if any are feasible or if there is enough interest in the Monticello and surrounding areas to support these types of things (I hope there is).
I do not know if it could be done.
Parking is a problem. First run picture costs are another
I do know that one community saved an old theater with grants and donations. People “bought” chairs much like church pews are donated, brass plaques with names of the people. They developed a small live theater program and classic movies.
Could you not see a “casablanca night”, dress as your favorite character.
I think Searcy has something similar with the Rialto, downtown on the square. Parking’s a beast, but the theater does second-run movies for low tickets. Just 1 or 2 shows a day. Not sure how well they’re doing, it’s been 10 years since I lived there.
I’ve always thought someone should do something with the old theatre…It is apart of our history… I remember going there as a child, and also taking my children when they were small. I hope someone does find something they can do to bring life back into that wonderful building… Those are great ideas..
