The Arkansas Tech Golden Suns shot 62.5 percent from the floor as they handed the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (5-13, 1-4 GSC) an 80-58 defeat at Steelman Fieldhouse on Saturday.

UAM controlled the first five minutes of the game, opening up with as much as a five-point (9-5) lead before the Golden Suns’ hot shooting took over. With UAM trailing by one (17-16) with 12:53 remaining in the half, ATU outscored the Cotton Blossoms 28-13 for the remainder of the half to race out to a 45-29 halftime lead.

ATU shot 68.2 percent from the floor in the first half.

The Golden Suns pushed their lead to as many as 32 in the second half (68-36) before UAM went on a 22-5 run to pull to within 15 (73-58) with 56 seconds remaining.

ATU was able to push their lead back to 22 after a series of foul shots and a three-point bucket by Amanda Grappe at the buzzer.

ATU’s Daiane Domingos led all players with 22 points. Gemma Gibson (Jr., Dodd City, Texas) led UAM with 15 points, while both Addie Lees (Jr., Plainview, Texas) and Sherelle Shipp (Sr., Wilmar, Ark.) added 13 points in the loss.

The Cotton Blossoms will return to action on Thursday, January 25 as they host Christian Brothers University at Steelman Fieldhouse. A 5 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.


Torre Doty (Sr., Austin, Texas) scored a career-high 42 points to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (7-10, 2-3 GSC-West) to an 87-78 victory over the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys on Saturday at Steelman Fieldhouse.

Doty’s 42 points ties him with John Haugh’s 42-point night against William Carey in 1994 as the eighth-best single-game scoring performance in UAM history.

The Wonder Boys held the lead over UAM for the majority of the first half, with the Weevils pulling ahead (39-38) after a Doty tip-in with 1:02 remaining in the half. UAM was able to extend their lead to as many as five (43-38) before going into the intermission with a three-point (43-40) lead.

The two teams slugged it out in the second half, trading leads ten times until the 5:57 mark, when Doty gave the Weevils the lead for good after a pair of free throws. UAM extended their lead to as many as ten (85-75) in the final minute after a pair of MJumbe “J.B.” Williams (Sr., Compton, Calif.) free-throws, sealing the UAM victory.

Doty’s 42 points led all players. Williams added 16 points, while Nate Newell (Sr., Monticello, Ark.) added 13 points. ATU’s Terrance Whiters scored 36 points, while Donald McCoy added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Wonder Boys.

The Boll Weevils will return to action on Thursday, January 25, as they play host to #20 Christian Brothers at Steelman Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
