Blossoms drop last game; Weevils snap 7-game losing streak
Published by Jeff February 24th, 2007 in News, Schools.In a game that was delayed twice by weather and was their season finale, the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (7-20, 3-11 GSC) dropped a 69-63 decision to the Southern Arkansas Lady Muleriders on Saturday at Steelman Fieldhouse.
Southern Arkansas opened the contest hot, pulling out to a 10-6 lead with 13:16 remaining in the opening half, however, the Lady Muleriders’ momentum was slowed at the 9:18 mark when the game was delayed 25 minutes due to a tornado warning in Drew County.
When play resumed, the Lady Muleriders extended their lead to seven (31-24) going into the half.
The Cotton Blossoms took charge in the opening minutes of the second half, eventually taking a lead (36-35) on a three-pointer by Addie Lees (Jr., Plainview, Texas) with 16:07 remaining in the half. The Cotton Blossoms extended their lead to as many as ten (49-39) with 11:06 remaining, but once again, weather intervened as the game was delayed for a second time, this time for 50 minutes as a second tornado warning halted play.
When play resumed, SAU reclaimed momentum and the lead with 4:18 remaining in the contest, and the Lady Muleriders held UAM at arm’s length the remainder of the way to seal the victory.
Bia da Silva (Sr., Sao Paolo, Brazil) led UAM with 20 points in the loss.
The Weevils’ victory was led by Nate Newell (Sr., Monticello, Ark.), who scored 28 points, and MJumbe “J.B.” Williams (Sr., Compton, Calif.), who scored 25, as the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils pulled out a 76-65 victory over the Southern Arkansas Muleriders on Saturday at Steelman Fieldhouse.
The Weevils snapped a seven-game losing streak with their win.
The Weevils controlled the contest in the early going, racing out to a ten-point (22-12) lead with 9;42 remaining in the opening half, however, SAU quickly clawed back and tied the contest at 23-23 just three minutes later.
After SAU briefly claimed the lead, the Boll Weevils pushed their lead to four (30-26) with 1:50 remaining in the half, eventually going into the intermission with a three-point (32-29) lead.
The Boll Weevils once again took charge in the opening minutes of the second half, extending their lead to as many as 13 (48-35). SAU would not go quietly, paring the UAM lead to one (54-53) with 6:30 left, before the Weevils pushed their lead back into double-digits in the closing minute of the contest.
Newell’s 28 points led all scorers. Williams’ 25 and Torre Doty’s (Sr., Austin, Texas) 12 points rounded out the UAM double-digit scorers.
