Blossoms, Weevils downed by SAU
Published by UAM News January 27th, 2007 in Site.The Lady Muleriders took charge in the opening minutes of the second half, pulling ahead by nine (41-32) with 14:17 remaining in the half. However, the Cotton Blossoms stormed back, pulling to within two (49-47) after a Gemma Gibson (Jr., Dodd City, Texas) lay-up with 8:23 remaining.
The Blossoms tied the game with 5:13 mark after a Gibson lay-up, but were unable to pull ahead, as SAU took the lead for good at the 3:26 mark after a pair of Davis free-throws, and cruised through the last minute to the victory.
Davis’ 27 points led all scorers. Gibson led UAM with 23 points, and Sherelle Shipp (Sr., Wilmar, Ark.) added 12 points in the Blossoms’ loss. The Blossoms will return to action on Thursday, February 1, as they travel to Searcy to face Harding at Rhodes Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (8-11, 3-4 GSC) were outscored 41-20 in the second half as they dropped a 65-48 decision to the Southern Arkansas University Muleriders on Saturday at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center in Magnolia.
The Weevils fall to 0-7 in road games this season.
The Weevils controlled the contest in the early going, pushing ahead by as many as six (11-5) after a Nate Newell (Sr., Monticello, Ark.) three-pointer with 14:07 remaining in the contest. However, SAU clawed back, pulling ahead after a Mori Turpin lay-up with just under five minutes to play in the opening half.
The Weevils quickly reclaimed the lead and pushed ahead by four (28-24) at the half.
The Muleriders took charge in the second half, taking the lead for good at the 12:16 mark after Leon Stone hit three free throws, and SAU cruised to the victory.
The 17-point margin of victory represented SAU’s biggest lead of the night.
The Boll Weevils will look to get back on the winning track on Thursday, February 1, as they travel to Searcy to face Harding at Rhodes Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
