Blossoms down Harding

Sherelle Shipp (Sr., Wilmar, Ark.) hit a pull-up jumper in the lane with two seconds remaining to propel the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (7-14, 3-5 GSC) to a 72-70 victory over Harding at Rhodes Field House on Friday night.

After Harding scored the opening bucket of the game, the Blossoms responded with three consecutive three-pointers to take a quick 9-2 lead less than two minutes into the contest. UAM continued to keep their hot hands going, connecting on ten three-pointers in the first half while shooting 45.5 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from long range.

After UAM went into the half with a 40-24 lead, Harding began to chip away at the UAM lead, finally tying the contest at 70 after Catherine McMenamy split a pair of free throws with 28 seconds remaining.

The missed free throw on McMenamy’s second attempt set up Shipp’s game-winning shot.

Shipp’s 17 points led the Cotton Blossoms. Addie Lees (Jr., Plainview, Texas) added 12 points in the victory. Harding’s Jasmine McClindon scored a game-high 20 points.

The Cotton Blossoms will return to action on Thursday, February 8, as they travel to Arkadelphia to face Ouachita Baptist. A 6 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.
