Monticello Elementary celebrated 100 Days of School, Monday.
The celebration “kicked off” with a 100 Days T-shirt parade through the halls of the school. Students then went back to their classrooms to participate in a variety of activities centered around the number 100. At lunch time, the 100th student that went through the line for each grade level was awarded a prize. Everyone joined in the celebration, including the cafeteria employees!
In an effort to ensure the safety of its students while buses are loading or unloading, the Monticello School District would like to make sure laws regarding passing of school buses are available to area citizens.
We are working with the Monticello Police Department and Drew County Sherriff Department to curb violations. Both departments have assured us of their support. They will be making special efforts to observe violators of this law. Below you will see the School Bus Fleet Magazine report on deaths that occurred 2011 – 2012 due to illegal passing of school buses. Laws as they pertain to a violator or the school bus driver are also listed below.
One of our most troubled areas is Hwy. 425. Oncoming traffic is not required to stop on multilane highways that are divided by a parkway or dividing strip of 20 ft. or more. This does not pertain to any area in Drew County. All oncoming traffic should stop as well as traffic following the bus!

At the North Little Rock Wildcat Classic, Hannah advanced to semi-finals in 3 events and placed 2nd in the finals of original oratory.

Monticello 6th grade students raised $4,773 for World Vision, to provide a water well in an undeveloped country.
Principal Jerry Martens is shown in the video swimming across the school pond, like he agreed to, if the students reached $3,100.
Also, 4 teachers agreed to spend Thursday night at school if $3,000 was reached, including Blake Abbott, who spent the night in a tent on top of the roof.
Monticello High School EAST is making an effort to “go green”.
Every Thursday, students collect paper from the recycle bins that are placed in every high school classroom.
They also collect from the OEC and Administration Building.
After all of the paper is collected, the Drew County Recycling Center picks it up and starts the recycling process.
Each student on the recycling team feels that they are doing their part in helping the economy.
6th grader Sam Pelkki is shown here shaving Monticello Middle School Assitant Principal Jerry Martens’ head.
Martens’ promised the student body to shave his blond locks if 80% of the MMS student body met their Accelerated Reader (AR) goal this 9-weeks grading period. In the end, 81% of the 6th-8th grade students met their goal by the March 6th deadline.
The top 4 student “point-earners”, including Pelkki, also had the opportunity to take turns shaving some of Martens’ hair. The AR program is a reading program in which students earn points by reading both fiction and non-fiction literature and taking and passing tests based on books read.
