Drew Central 4th Graders Participate In 2015 One Hour Of Code Event

Thursday, December 10th, 2015

e2zn0gk7 copyDrew Central fourth graders participated in the 2015 One Hour of Code which is a one-hour activity designed for students of all ages.

The largest learning event in history kicks off during Computer Science Education Week, December 7-13.  The goal was to have a global movement with millions of students from around the world learning about coding at the same time. Students can choose from a variety of self-guided tutorials, for kindergarten and up.  Once students see what they create right before their eyes, they’re empowered to keep going.  Why computer science?  Every 21st-century student should have the opportunity to take part in creating technology that’s changing the world.  The basics help nurture creativity and problem-solving skills, and prepare students for any future career.  By exposing both girls and boys to fundamental computing concepts on a level playing field, we can inspire today’s generation of students to build technology. Drew Central Fourth Graders Learn About “Cephalopods: The Jet Set”

Monday, May 5th, 2014

DSC00174Drew Central fourth grade students in Eva Arrington’s class learned about “Cephalopods: The Jet Set.” Students learned to classify by kingdom, phylum, and class. They worked with their lab partner and researched the four main types of cephalopods: octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus. Cephalopod means head and feet. Cephalopods do not have a torso.

The Distance Learning program at Drew Central Elementary in conjunction with the Alaska Sealife Center in Seward, Alaska guided students on dissecting squid. Students discovered the ink sac which squids use to confuse their enemies. They located the eyes, mouth, two tentacles, pen, etc. Students looked for the reproductive system to determine if their squid was a male or female. Another discovery was that squids have bilateral symmetry.

Monday, February 25th, 2013

Drew Central 3rd & 4th graders’ presentation of the musical Aladdin under the direction of Ashley Gonzalez was a theatrical success!

Using the Common Core State Standards as her guide, Ms. Gonzalez, Drew Central Elementary music teacher, read the book to the students first and a character study followed. Every third and fourth grader had a part in the production from actors, dancers, stage managers, props managers, and audience greeters. A backdrop of Agrabah was designed and painted by students under the guidance of Lindsay Harper Groce, Drew Central Elementary art teacher.

The musical had two acts and an intermission. The play ended with a grand finale of all students on stage singing with baton twirlers, gymnasts, bread venders, flag bearers, belly dancers, Jr. Djinns, guards, and a beggar woman.
