Accidental Shooting Causes Death of Jefferson County Man, Visiting Drew County

A 911 call came into MPD dispatch, at 3:39, Thursday afternoon, reporting an accidental, self-inflicted gun shot to a 68 year old man at a deer camp, on Mamie Martin Road, in extreme southern Drew County.
According to Sheriff Mark Gober, Thomas J. Burton, of White Hall, in Jefferson County, was at the deer camp with family members and friends, when the 357 handgun went off, striking him an the leg, severing a major artery.
Sheriff Gober and two deputies were dispatched to the scene, and held pressure on the wound, to reduce the bleeding, until SEEMS soon arrived, to transfer Burton to DMH, where he later passed away.
Gober told MLive, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Burton family, during the loss of their grandfather.”
