The Monticello School District held its monthly board meeting at the Monticello Central Administration Office board room at 5:30 July 19.

Coke Sweeter than Pepsi

The most important items discussed included switching from Pepsi to Coke machines, accepting bids for several projects and renewing milk and bread contracts.

The school district, currently three years into a seven-year contract with Pepsi, decided to escape its contract and sign with Coke, who had a sweeter offer.

With a 10-year contract with Coke, the school district will receive a one-time $15,000 payment towards a scoreboard, an annual $500 scholarship, furnished athletic equipment, $500 in free products per year, and over $45,000 in rebates and commission, totaling over $95,000 over 10 years.

The contract with Coke should go into effect August 1, and the district must renew it annually.

Bids Accepted

The board also approved a lone bid for dairy products from Coleman. The board received three bids for bread products from Earth Grains, Flowers Foods, and Hostess. The board chose Flowers Foods because they have a current contract with the company for the past year.

Following up on business from last month’s meeting, the board discussed bids on construction and repairs. Paint and Lighting Plus will replace the carpet in the high school library at an estimated $8,103.

The metal siding for the high school gymnasium will be replaced by DMC of Monticello for an estimated $45,867.

The padding of the high school gym bleachers will be replaced by the Arkansas Department of Corrections at an estimated $21,896.72.

Personnel Changes

The board accepted several resignations: Peggy King, Terry Young, Regina Gorman and Becki Williams.

The board also accepted several new employees: Diane Lewis, custodian at MHS; Jessica Finch, math teacher at MHS; Deborah Holderfield, part-time PE at MES; Kelly Pieroni, fifth grade at MIS; Regina Lanehart, counselor at MIS; Angelia Anderson, Parapro at MIS; Carlton Halley, custodian at MMS; Rhonda Trantham, custodian at MMS; Carol Santucci, Interim Assistant Superintendent, Judy Selig, Parent Center Coordinator at MIS.

Other Topics

The board approved minutes from June’s meeting and June’s financial report.

The board passed the School Election Resolution pertaining to school law if only one candidate is up for election. This resolution saves costs by not requiring polling stations to vote for a single candidate.

The board then approved the choir handbook, which now states choir students will be required to audition for the All-Region choir. This new requirement will go into effect with the new school year.

The MHS Choir Booster Club was also discussed. Dues are $10 and students, families and businesses are welcome to join. Students and families are not required to join the club for the class.
