This past Friday, UAM Celebrated its 2021 Fall Arbor Day on campus. The reason was twofold. The pandemic had suspended two earlier events. To keep our Campus Tree USA status, there is a requirement to host an arbor day event. The second reason is that planting in the fall and winter is healthier for the tree. College of Forestry, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Dean Michael Blazier says that it’s not uncommon for many southern states to host fall planting events because the cooler weather causes the tree to go dormant. Blazier said the prime months in the south are December and January. He said that April heat causes stress.

And, of course, being good stewards of the forest, we appreciate our campus trees. Come and enjoy them if you get a chance. We have more than 1200 of them on campus.
