Arkansas Historic Preservation Program Cleans & Restored Graves At Oakland Cemetery

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program held a program back in October at Oakland Cemetery
where Jonathan Appell from Connecticut instructed on using D/2 for cleaning. People broke into teams cleaning gravestones using the proper brushes, D/2 and soft pliable tools to remove growth. Jonathan repaired gravestones and people participated in leveling, repairing, and applying masonry putty to adhere the elements of the gravestone back together.
The one that says “mother” was snapped close to the base because it was so thin and it began to erode while it was in the wet ground for years. Jonathan demonstrated using marble dust to create infill for the eroded cracks so there would be no open areas for water to get in. The gravestone was repaired and reapplied to the base with masonry epoxy.
