Twelve students from the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) College of Forestry, Agriculture and Natural Resources recently participated in the 62^nd annual Southern Forestry Schools Conclave competition.

The conclave was hosted by LSU, from March 21^st to 24^th, with fourteen Southern universities fielding teams to compete in a range of technical and physical events. The UAM team finished in second place overall, earning fourth place in the technical events and second place in the physical events.

In the technical events, Caleb Wilson of Elwood, NE, finished second in wood technology, and Richard Harris of Monticello, AR, ranked third in timber estimation. In the physical events, UAM placed in the top three across seven events. John McDowell of Crosby, MS, finished first in the pole-felling event, and Greg Craig of Mena, AR, finished second in both the pole climb and speed chop events. Other second place finishers included GreySun Perry of Elkins, AR, in birling, Justin Ballard of Camden, AR, in the axe throw, and Justin Ballard and Caleb Wilson in the men’s crosscut. In the women’s crosscut competition, Kaitlyn Barnes of Warren, AR, and Mikaela Farmer of Randolph Center, VT, finished third, and Tyler Raines of Warren, AR, also ranked third in the knife throw event.

Greg Craig represented UAM in the Stihl Timbersports competition, and he ranked sixth in the field. His performance will be part of the televised Timbersports series.

Stephen F. Austin finished first overall, and Clemson finished third behind UAM. Since the competition began in 1958, UAM has won 31 times, and it has finished in the top three nearly every year. The other universities competing (in order of completion) were Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, Georgia, Louisiana Tech, Florida, Abraham Baldwin, Auburn, Mississippi State, Alabama A&M, Tennessee and Louisiana State.
