52 Year Prison Sentence Given in Jury Trial

April 5th, 2019 by

Delvin Damond Nealdrug sentenceAccording to Monticello Police Chief Jason Akers, a former Monticello resident was convicted Wednesday on Drug Trafficking charges by a Drew County jury after a short deliberation in the guilt phase of the trial.

The case, prosecuted by Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Frank Spain, was a day long trial.

Delvin Neal, age 32, was found guilty of Trafficking methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and endangering the welfare of a minor. Spain stated that Neal was found by Monticello Police to be in possession of approximately 400 grams of methamphetamine at the time of his arrest.

The jury sentenced Neal to 30 years on trafficking methamphetamine, 10 years on the count of drug paraphernalia. The jury recommended those sentences run consecutive. The endangering welfare of a minor charge carried a 12 month sentence in the Drew County Jail along with a 2,500.00 fine.

The court ordered this sentence to run consecutive with a 16 year sentence Neal received for a probation revocation on previous Drew County drug charges. According to Spain, the earliest Neal could receive parole is in approximately 16 years.

Akers commended the work of Monticello Police Narcotics officers as well as the effort of the Prosecution Attorney and the Arkansas Department of Community Punishment, who also assisted in the case and commended the jury for their diligence in reviewing the evidence presented and coming to a just verdict.
