Drew Central 4th Graders Participate In 2015 One Hour Of Code Event

December 10th, 2015 by

e2zn0gk7 copyDrew Central fourth graders participated in the 2015 One Hour of Code which is a one-hour activity designed for students of all ages.

The largest learning event in history kicks off during Computer Science Education Week, December 7-13.  The goal was to have a global movement with millions of students from around the world learning about coding at the same time. Students can choose from a variety of self-guided tutorials, for kindergarten and up.  Once students see what they create right before their eyes, they’re empowered to keep going.  Why computer science?  Every 21st-century student should have the opportunity to take part in creating technology that’s changing the world.  The basics help nurture creativity and problem-solving skills, and prepare students for any future career.  By exposing both girls and boys to fundamental computing concepts on a level playing field, we can inspire today’s generation of students to build technology.

The activity begins with a video clip hosted by Kathleen Kennedy, producer of Star Wars the Force Awakens.  She explains the important role that coding played while filming the movie. She stated that the new character BB-8 is controlled by software.  She shared that computer science impacts every industry.  Next, Rachel Rhodes, lead engineer for Star Wars Animation and Creature Team, explained that coding is usually done in text, but to get started students would use blocks.  Last, the students built their own Star Wars game using the basics of programming.  The goal was to help BB-8 collect scrap metal.  BB-8 would perform the commands that students programmed.
