Prosecuting Attorney to Investigate Missing Museum Money

Tuesday night, members of the Drew County Historical Society, the board who has operated the museum for years, unanimously voted to “present information to the prosecuting attorney for further investigation” in reference to possibility of misappropriation of funds.
The volunteer, non-profit organization became overdrawn at a local bank in early August, drawing attention to the potential issues at hand.
“A lot of local people have donated (to the museum), as have the city and county,” stated board president, Tommy Gray, adding that a total amount was not available, at this time.
Two members of the group resigned, recently (after the discrepancy came to light), including the museum board’s treasurer.
In August, the board voted to discontinue museum operating hours, except for pre-scheduled tours, for three months, due to their financial condition. (To schedule tours contact, Sammy Mullis Insurance.)
Other recent expenses were $5,450 for an air conditioning unit (replacing a unit installed in 1974), over $4,000 for insurance, and ongoing operating expenses of around $1200/month.
The board will discuss, at their October meeting, about the opening in November.
As a security measure, the society also now requires two signatures on all checks being paid.
