41-year-old Jerome Terry told Circuit Judge Bynum Gibson he enrolled as a college student in UAM’s hospitality program (using his son’s identity) so that when his son, Jarell Terry, was released from prison, he would have a college education.

The prosecution pointed out that Terry received over $11,000 in financial aid, and was able to profit $6,000 in the process.

Terry’s charges include financial identity fraud and 2nd degree forgery.

The crime began in the fall semester last year, using his imprisoned son’s state issued ID card.

The plea arrangement will sentence Jerome Terry to two years in ADC, with eight more years suspended.

He is also required to repay the $6,359 he received as a refund.  UAM has re-imbursed all of the federal aid funds back to that program, so the university is left holding the bag on the 2 semesters’ expenses that Terry cost them.

In his defense, Terry told the court he received all A’s, except for a B and 2 C’s.

Jarell Terry, age 22 is in ADC on theft and drug charges, listed as a habitual offender.

It was not mentioned who gets the college credit.
