Monticello OEC Students Compete At SkillsUSA

Monticello Occupational Education Center (OEC) students traveled to Hot Springs April 14 – 16 to participate in the Arkansas SkillsUSA competition. SkillsUSA is a national organization for students preparing for technical, skilled and service occupations in high schools and colleges/technical schools. The event is held annually and is hosted by Arkansas industries and the Arkansas SkillsUSA Organization.
Students from Drew Central High School and Monticello High School that attend the Monticello OEC were chosen by their teacher as an outstanding student and competed in competition areas including Carpentry, Architectural Drafting, Technical Math, Medical Math, CNC Milling, Precision Machining, Welding, Technical Drafting, and Auto Mechanics. A total of 91 schools from across Arkansas competed in 73 different categories.
Students competing included Jose Ambrocio, Brandon Ashcraft, Hannah Bates, Dewanna Bittle, Trey Busch, Cody Curtis, Dustin Davis, Chris Halley, Maggie Hand, Michael Harris, Sam Hickey, Kevin Kamza, Hunter Lackey, Lillian Olivares, Lane Roark, and Cole Wilkerson.
Maggie Hand, a senior from Monticello, won the gold medal placing first in Medical Math and will be attending SkillsUSA National Competitions in June. Jose Ambrocia, a junior from Drew Central, placed 3rd with a bronze medal in Carpentry. Michael Harris, a senior from Monticello, placed second in CNC Milling, winning a silver medal. Trey Busch, a junior from Monticello placed second in Precision Machining with a silver medal and Chris Halley, a senior from Monticello placed third, receiving the bronze medal in Precision machining. Brandon Ashcraft, a senior from Monticello won the Bronze medal with third place in Technical Math.
Students and teachers also enjoyed an evening at Magic Springs theme park, which had been rented for the SkillsUSA contestants.
