Water Leak Repair – “Why’d they do that?”

At last week’s City Council meeting, someone asked about a “sample pipe section” that was on display.
At time, a small leak can be patched, similar to one of the seven shown above, instead of replacing a section of pipe.
When a pipe is cut and replaced, the entire section has to be turned off, leaving possibly dozens of customers without service. When the repair is completed, the system then has to be flushed to remove contaminants.
When a “patch” is applied, it can be done, with the water pressure reduced, instead of cutting the water service to customers, and the line doesn’t have to be flushed.
Sometimes replacing a section is requred, but often patching is an effective solution.

I hope the price tag quoted is for new and not patched pipes. The original pipes are more susceptible to bursting when patched, are they not?
