City Council Votes to Accept Bids for Fire Station & Move Funds for Sadie Johnson Center

May 1st, 2012 by

The City Council voted unanimously to allow Mayor Allen Maxwell to begin advertising for bids for the fire station to be built at the W.C. Whaley lot.

The Council also voted to combine CD’s and budgeted items that have not, or will not be used this year, in order to fund the deficit in the Sadie Johnson Building Fund.

They will be using $10,000 that was left over from the Splash Pad, along with $45,000 from the Jordan Park Lighting Walking Path Fund. They will add this amount to a combined $26,428.08 of CD’s to boost the Sadie Johnson Building Fund to the appropriate amount to complete the project.

Alderman Al Peer expressed his concern with taking money out of the Jordan Park Lighting Fund, saying how dark the park is, and how it is the only park in Monticello not lit at night.

Mr. Peer agreed that the Sadie Johnson Building is top priority, but he wanted to make sure that the issue of no lights at Jordan Park would not be forgotten. In response, Alderman Tim Chase suggested possibly finding and using old lighting, perhaps from the old Burlington Industries factory, to install and temporarily use to light the park, until funding is available for new lighting.

Mayor Maxwell then said that he would contact Entergy and ask them to put “night watch” lights on the poles, and this should not impact the City very much financially.
