At last night’s city council meeting, MEDC Director Truman Hamilton told those present that Monticello had been invited to complete a questionnaire, which could lead to Monticello being considered as a possible site for a company that plans to develop a 5,000 ton per day waste-to-diesel recycling center.  Prospective plans are to recycle 4,000 tons daily of municipal solid waste, 500 tons daily of industrial hazardous waste, and 250 tons daily of both low-level radioactive and regulated medical waste.

Hamilton shared his report, and clarified that there is no way to estimate how many communities received this survey, but the he felt it was likely to have gone out to over 1,000 locations.

The operation will require 100 acres of land, direct rail access and highway access.  Average daily activity is estimated to be 125 trucks and 65 rail cars delivering waste to the facility, and 10 trucks and 20 rail cars daily picking up fuel, and could potentialy be housed in the current industrial park on HWY 35 South.

If the plant management chooses Monticello, there will have to be a substantial financial commitment to reach the level of infra-structure required at the site, possibly costing up to $1 million or more to get them here.

The prospective plant will create 550 jobs, and produce an estimated payroll of $31.5 million.
