Leyden in Concert at Pauline Baptist at 10 PM, Plus More, in Benefit to “Rooster” Ferguson Family

December 31st, 2008 by Joe Burgess

Tonight is more than just an event for young people, if you like playing games, eating food, or music (basically if you are breathing) you are welcome.

There will be a time of snacks, games, and live music by special guest LEYDEN, at Pauline Baptist Church in the Fellowship Hall.

So join us tonight, New Years Eve at 10:00 pm, for this benefit concert to help the Dustin “Rooster” Ferguson family.

There is no cost to get in, but donations will be appreciated. All donations will go to the Ferguson’s.

Leyden is a relativly new band from Hot Springs, Arkansas, playing for Jesus Christ and to further His Kingdom. Leyden feels that God gives everyone talents and passions to serve and please Him. With the hard hitting music and high energy performance, it’s hard not to notice the passion these guys have.

Leyden feels, ”We believe rock n’ roll is a revolution designed to move people out of their comfort zone. There is no greater revolution than to change the world for Jesus Christ.”

Hampton Inn Coming to Monticello-More Info

December 28th, 2008 by Joe Burgess

12212007-004.JPGIn December of last year, this sign appeared on HWY 425 North, near where the old storage sheds used to be located.  Since then, the metal buildings have been removed, and ground preparation has begun.

MonticelloLive spoke last week with the owners of the future 3 story facility, and here are some of the details.

The new Hampton Inn will provide 68 guest rooms, an indoor spa with whirlpool, and also include an exercise area on the site.

The facility’s owner also commented on the high standards that Hampton Inns feature, including large rooms, LCD TVs, ”Cloud 9″ bedding, and hot breakfasts.

Monticello’s new Hampton Inn is expected to open in January, 2010.

Memories from the Museum

December 27th, 2008 by Sheilla Lampkin

With Christmas being celebrated this week, I have a rather poignant Christmas memory to share from the late 1930’s.
As you know, America was in the midst of the Great Depression and “cash money” was difficult to be found in those times. In this particular story our storyteller was a student in the 7th grade. At that time, and even in those circumstances, there were Christmas parties scheduled at school and the students “drew names” so each child would receive a gift. Read the rest of this entry »

Severe Thunderstorm Moves into Monticello

December 27th, 2008 by Joe Burgess

Right around 5 p.m., the severe thunderstorm that had been predicted for Monticello rolled into town.

Large hail and damaging wind, possibly up to 35 MPH have been forecast.

The early bands of the storm have caused a couple of minor wrecks, with some cases of water being across lanes of several streets.

Power outages and fallen trees are very likely, so try to stay home, stay dry, and keep checking MonticelloLive for weather updates, and damage reports, as information becomes available.

Another Truck Overturns on Old Dermott HWY

December 26th, 2008 by Joe Burgess

The driver of this Chevy truck swerved to miss a couple of deer on Old Dermott HWY late this afternoon, losing control, and rolling the Z71.

An ambulance was called for the driver, and the passenger seemed to be uninjured.

Trooper Bo Norris worked the accident.  Drew County Sheriff’s deputies were also at the scene, as did a MPD officer, since part of Old Dermott HWY is in the city.

J.A Goad Towing set the vehicle, which had very little damage, upright.

Phase two of the tryouts for the Monticello Police Dept. Emergency Entry Team was held recently at the MPD firing range.

Officers Lee Fleming, Brad Johnston, and Larry Smith Jr. (shown front to back in photo) are 3 of the 6 applicants who seek to be a part of the unit.

The days tasks included cardboard targets, and the obstacle course.

The Entry Team includes a qualified sniper, 2 hostage negotiators, and a paramedic.

Click here to the Mock Drill held earlier this year at Monticello High School, were simulated hostages were rescued.
