Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer diagnosed in women in the United States. There is a new diagnosis of Breast Cancer every 3 minutes, and a life lost to Breast Cancer every 14 minutes. According to the American Cancer Society’s 2008 Cancer Facts & Figures, one out of every eight women is at risk of getting breast cancer in her lifetime.

In Arkansas, it is estimated that 1,790 women will be newly diagnosed with breast cancer and 410 will die of the disease in 2008. A woman’s best chances for survival are early detection through regular screening mammograms and clinical breast exams. In order to bring attention to this disease and provide information and education to women, Drew HEALTH will partner with the Arkansas Department of Health to promote Pink Carnation Sunday.

Pink Carnation Sunday focuses on the importance of annual mammography. Trained by BreastCare staff, faith-based volunteers give an educational speech to their church congregation promoting breast cancer awareness. Women over 40 then receive a pink carnation and make a pledge to get a mammogram. Pink Carnation Sunday, a free program, began eight years ago with 12 churches in three counties. Today, the program currently has 177 faith-based organizations all over the state.

Anyone wishing to help with the Pink Carnation Sunday program, or sponsor the program at their Drew County church can attend an informational meeting, Thursday August 28, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at the MidSOUTH Training Academy 109 Westgate Drive in Monticello. I think that this is a wonderful idea. Breast cancer not only the person who is faced with the diagnosis; it can affect everyone around them. I have at least two friends who were diagnosed with breast cancer. One of them is no longer with us, but the other friend is alive and well. I started going to the Race for the Cure in support of my friends. It was important to show my support for them and all the other people who have been touched by this disease.

I attend the Komen Race for the Cure every year. For me, it is one of the most positive experiences that anyone can have. Everyone there is full of encouragement and good feelings. From the sea of pink to the Three Miles of Men, everyone is there to say that we won’t let breast cancer beat any of us.

For anyone who has never been to the race, I challenge you to join the Drew County team and have an experience that you will never forget. Support these 1790 women and the countless others who have been diagnosed.

To join the team, just get in contact with Mendy Bickford or me at 367-6825. Let’s make a difference.
