$10,000,000 Water System Contract Approved by City Council

September 27th, 2013 by

zzThe Council has had numerous presentations and discussions over the past months regarding what will be included in the renovations, and a representative from Siemons was present at this meeting to again provide an overview of the plan that Siemons has outlined to revamp the City’s water system.

The current system has been mapped in detail, with each existing water leak documented on the map. The current badly-deterioriated water pipes will be replaced, the pipes will be re-routed along the edges of the streets, and the layout will be re-designed with shut-off valves and other features to make any future repairs easily completed with a minimum of disruption to the customers.

The pipe layout has also been designed to minimize the need to dig up streets, and to have the minimum impact possible on existing trees and other environmental features. All streets that are damaged by this project will be repaired under the contract. All water meters will be replaced with radio-read meters, and a computerized system will be installed to alert the water department to meter damage, water leaks, and other issues. Approximately 100 fire hydrants will be replaced. Anything that can be re-used will be. Anything to rusted or otherwise damaged will be replaced.

The city has been divided into 6 zones, and the work will be completed in one zone before starting on the next zone. Local vendors and workers will be used whenever possible. Since 60% of the water leaks occur in 19% of the city, it will most likely be the first area addressed by this project. Engineers will review the leak map one final time before determining where repairs will begin.

This has been an extremely thorough and concise investigation to maximize service while minimizing disruption. Siemens will lease the old Centerpoint building for two years, and will have people locally to work with the project and the community.
